Solving the World’s Toughest Challenges

We design and build the tangible and intangible, everything you see (and don’t see) that helps our cities thrive. We’ve worked relentlessly to make our clients and our communities successful since 1898, because we know safe, essential infrastructure is the foundation of a flourishing society.

Connecting the Possible to the Powerful

We’re big on the ampersand around here. (You’ll see them everywhere at all our offices!) But it’s more than just a symbol. It’s a promise that connects the possible to the powerful. People & partners. Safety & security. Big thinking & relentless execution. Projects & potential. Collaboration & community. When you’re focused on the “and,” opportunities are limitless.

Our Principles Are What Drive Us

  • Safety Is First: A powerful commitment to safety and health is hardwired into each of us. We’re all personally accountable — to our colleagues, clients, families, communities, and ourselves.
  • Client Service Drives Our Success: Our clients are partners and friends; our responsiveness to their needs never falters. We’re relentless in our dedication. We strive to be the type of people they’d want on their teams.
  • What We Do Matters: We tackle some of the world’s most challenging and complex problems. We never forget the enormous responsibility — and opportunity — to collaborate with clients to improve global quality of life.
  • We Boldly Go: We look to the daring and caring example of our entrepreneurial founders who pursued their dream of the future with vision, courage, and precision. Advancing their journey, we’re always moving forward, for the benefit of all.
  • We Are All Employee-Owners: Employee ownership is the common thread uniting us to deliver remarkable projects. As partners, we are accountable to each other — so we work harder and think bigger for collective success.
  • We Make This Place Great: We get to shape and inform how our company operates because we’re owners. This business decision makes us a great place to work for all and a remarkable place to build a career.
  • We Invest for a Better World: Giving back is an inherent value — as a company and individually. We give back because we see a need and want to make it right, because we care about our communities, and because we are uniquely positioned to help.
  • One Burns & McDonnell: Great things happen when we prioritize the good we can do together over the things we can accomplish alone. We respect all, are accountable to all, and trust in all.

Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)

Renewable natural gas (RNG) is steadily growing in demand as a sustainable alternative transportation fuel and a drop-in replacement for traditional natural gas, helping decarbonize municipalities, utilities, institutions, and industry through its use in thermal applications and electricity generation. RNG can be produced from a variety of sources, and its utilization helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by capturing methane that may otherwise be emitted and displacing geologic natural gas.

Leveraging RNG requires complex facilities and infrastructure to collect, process, and convert organic materials into biogas via anaerobic digestion. The type of anaerobic digestion process deployed depends on feedstock characteristics, loading rates, retention time, and the effective management of residuals (digestate) after anaerobic digestion is complete. Once biogas is generated, several processes remove impurities so it can be beneficially utilized locally or upgraded to natural-gas quality and injected into nearby pipeline networks. A critical part of any project is the efficient and accurate evaluation of the anaerobic digestion, biogas pretreatment, and upgrading processes in concert with the RNG quality requirements and overall project objectives. With decades of experience with anaerobic digestion and biogas beneficial use, we have helped develop robust and reliable processes on all types of biogas generation facilities.

Our professionals provide deep experience in the full spectrum of consulting, permitting, engineering, construction, commissioning, and compliance services. We draw on our understanding and experience with RNG producers, utilities, offtake partners, and developers to inform sensible solutions that meet your technical and financial needs.

Comprehensive Support

From agricultural wastes, landfill gas, and food waste to municipal and industrial wastewater, we help you convert wastes into a valuable resource. We have served as trusted advisers, permitting specialists, designers, and constructors for numerous biogas beneficial-use projects, drawing on extensive experience applied to the unique considerations of each project or program of projects we undertake.

Our full range of RNG services helps you seamlessly go from feedstock collection and processing through pipeline interconnect. Our multidisciplinary team routinely assists with permitting, land acquisition, design, and construction of RNG facilities, distribution and transmission pipelines, compressor stations, and M&R stations from the beginning to the successful conclusion of projects.
