CARLSBAD, January 28, 2021 – Anaergia Technologies, LLC (“Anaergia”) and Universal Waste Systems Inc. (“UWS”) today announced their agreement to construct an organics waste processing plant. Located at a UWS Materials Recovery Facility in the City of Los Angeles, the project will support recycLA’s organics waste landfill diversion efforts and will help meet organics waste recycling requirements mandated by California Senate Bill 1383.
As part of the project’s turnkey solid waste processing line, Anaergia’s Organics Extrusion Press (OREX™) will recover organics from contaminated municipal solid waste through high-pressure extrusion. The OREX™ will divert up to 300 tons per day of organic waste from the City’s municipal solid waste stream previously destined for landfill. The project is expected to be operational by the end of 2021.
The project will beneficially reduce more than 70,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year while generating enough energy to displace more than 2.5 million gallons of diesel fuel per year.
“The City of Los Angeles and its residents continue to lead the way in sustainable organics waste management and landfill diversion in California,” said Yaniv Scherson, Anaergia’s Western Region Managing Director. “Our long-term partnership with UWS will reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the conversion of landfilled organic waste into carbon negative fuel, thus contributing to a circular economy. We are proud of this opportunity to work with UWS to further support the City and recycLA.”
“Partnering with Anaergia in extracting value from everyday waste streams aligns with UWS’s commitment to support a sustainable future” said Mark Blackburn, UWS President. “UWS is a family owned and operated company with three generations working together to provide responsible and innovative waste management solutions in Southern California.”
Under a separate agreement, the recovered organic waste will be processed by Anaergia’s affiliate, Rialto Bioenergy Facility, LLC, in Rialto, California. Utilizing Anaergia’s high-throughput and high-efficiency anaerobic digestion technologies, the organic waste will be converted into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas and fertilizer.
