May 5th, 2017 – BCSE president shares insights on the first 100 days of Trump’s presidency for the energy industry. While many people are wondering, what impact the Trump administration will have on renewable energy, Lisa Jacobson, president, Business Council on Sustainable Energy (BCSE), Washington, isn’t so sure much will change. During the North American Waste-to-Energy (NAWTEC) Conference, April 23-26 at the Raddison Blu in Minneapolis, hosted by the Energy Recovery Council and the Solid Waste Association of North America she told attendees those in the driver’s seat don’t have a deep knowledge of the energy industry including technologies like waste-to-energy.

May 6th, 2017 – EMPA, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (an interdisciplinary Swiss research institute for applied materials sciences and technology), has been stringently testing exhaust gases of currently available cars in Europe and says the results are alarming. Using a new test that includes measuring emissions in actual traffic, EMPA has shown natural gas powered vehicles (NGV) stand out as a clean alternative.
May 9th, 2017 – A Sweden-based combined heat and power (CHP) consortium has said that it is pushing ahead with its project and has secured €2.9m worth of funding. The project consortium is formed of Meva Energy, the developer of small, circular energy systems with a minimum of distribution and parasitic losses, the research institute of Sweden (RISE) and a leading international furniture manufacturer.

May 9th, 2017 – WASHINGTON, DC – The American Biogas Council, the trade association for the U.S. biogas industry, applauds the recent introduction of the bipartisan Agriculture Environmental Stewardship Act (S. 988). This legislation, introduced last week by Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Pat Roberts (R-KS) will increase the sustainability of farms by helping to deploy new nutrient recovery and biogas systems to recycle organic material into baseload renewable energy and healthy soil products. The Act provides a 30 percent investment tax credit (ITC) for qualifying biogas and nutrient recovery systems.

May 9th, 2017 – Plans to build a biogas plant on what was once Mexico City’s largest landfill site are going ahead, according to Mexican News Daily. The Bordo Poniente landfill site was closed late in 2011 as part of an effort to make the city’s waste management system more environmentally friendly. In November 2012, a concession was granted for the creation of a methane plant.

May 9th, 2017 – The Lumley Leadership Award for Lake Stewardship was awarded to Clean Fuel Partners, LLC (Clean Fuel) at the Clean Lakes Alliance’s annual Save the Lakes Breakfast for its vital work to promote clean lakes by reducing phosphorus entering the Yahara Watershed. “Since taking over the operation of the Dane biodigester, Clean Fuel Partners has shown they are committed to making our community’s lakes cleaner and healthier,” said Clean Lakes Alliance Executive Director James Tye.

May 10th, 2017 – New Flyer Industries Inc. (New Flyer), a North American manufacturer of heavy-duty transit buses, has been awarded a contract to supply 110 heavy-duty 60-foot articulated Xcelsior®compressed natural gas (CNG) buses by New York City Transit Authority (NYCT). The state-funded contract is valued at USD 95 million. “We are thrilled that New Flyer continues to be awarded opportunities to build transit buses for NYCT and MTA Bus Company (together, MTA) which make up the largest transit agency in North America with over 5,700 transit buses in their fleet and an annual ridership of nearly 2.7 billion,” said Paul Smith, Executive Vice President, Sales, Marketing and Customer Program Management.
May 11th, 2017 – The U.S. Energy Information Administration has released the May edition of its Short-Term Energy Outlook, which includes 2017 and 2018 forecasts for biomass power generation. The EIA currently predicts wood biomass will be used to generate 110,000 MWh per day of electricity this year and next year, down slightly from 111,000 MWh per day in 2016. Waste biomass is expected to generate 60,000 MWh per day of electricity in 2017, and 2018, maintaining the level generated in 2016.
May 11th, 2017 – On May 17, RNG Coalition staff and members will join the University of California Riverside to open the Center for Renewable Natural Gas with a ceremonial ribbon cutting. Formally named “The University of California, Riverside, Center for Environmental Research and Technology, Center for Renewable Natural Gas,” the RNG Center (or CRNG) will operate with University personnel under Director Arun Raju. Already, Director Raju and RNG Coalition Executive Staff have begun collaboration on a series of research and RNG advancement initiatives to boost RNG adoption.

May 11th, 2017 – Novamont commissioned IGlux Witzenhausen GmbH and Witzenhausen-Institut GmbH to conduct a scientific study into the behaviour of biodegradable carrier bags made from MATER-BI—the bioplastic made by Novamont—in German anaerobic digestion plants. The use of biodegradable bags made from MATER-BI was tested in a procedure which encompassed the entire process using equipment made by four different companies: Kompogas, Thoeni, Bekon and WTT.
